Community Leadership Program Details

Important Information

Schedule

  • This is a three-day intensive overnight retreat. The retreat begins at 7:30 am on Tuesday and ends at 4:30 pm on Thursday. Programming goes 8-9 pm the first two evenings, and social gathering often takes place after that. Morning programming begins at 8 am. Please plan to be on time and present the full three days for all programming. Your presence ensures you get the most out of the experience, but it is also a matter of respect to your fellow classmates. Please let us know if you have questions or issues.
  • Check-in begins at 7:30am on Tuesday at the Barn Abbey in New Harmony. Programming begins promptly at 8:30 am. A light breakfast and coffee will be provided. Please allow enough time to get settled and do check-in procedures.
  • A detailed itinerary will be provided to you upon arrival. Activities on the schedule are subject to change.

Work

  • Think of the retreat as a vacation. You are welcome to address work issues during down time, but you may find you don’t have much time. Many people choose to socialize in the evenings.

Meals

  • LE provides all the meals (breakfast/lunch/dinner on Tuesday-Wednesday, and breakfast/lunch on Thursday). We also provide lots of snacks, but if you have a favorite snack or drink, you can bring it.
  • If you have any allergies or special dietary needs, please let us know via the forms we send to you.

Sleeping Accommodations

  • The Barn Abbey is a rustic retreat house with bunk beds and shared rooms and bathrooms. Staying at the Barn is a fun part of the retreat experience, but if you have special circumstances or simply do not wish to share a room or sleep in a bunk bed, you may stay at the New Harmony Inn at your own expense (ask for the Leadership Everyone/corporate rate). We discourage commuting from home as it removes you from the retreat, but we understand extenuating circumstances. Please let us know if you choose not to stay at the Barn.’
  • See “About the Barn Abbey,” below, for more info as well as directions.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable (jeans are fine). The Barn gets cold, even in summer, so please bring a sweater or equivalent.
  • Standard items for a trip—toiletries, clothes, pillow/blanket if you want. Linens and towels are provided
  • Water bottle and/or coffee cup if you like (makes for less dishes!)
  • Please bring your calendar so we can arrange for follow-up meetings.
  • Any specific snacks or drinks you like (there is a little room in the fridge to store it).
  • Cash or check if you want to go to Yellow Tavern (they also have an ATM).
  • You are welcome to bring games, alcohol, etc. for after-hours.
  • This is not a “networking” event, but you are welcome to bring brochures, flyers, etc. to share information about your profession and volunteer activities.

Dress

  • Comfortable (jeans are fine). The Barn gets cold, even in summer, so please bring a sweater or equivalent.
  • Weather permitting, we may do activities outside, so be sure to bring clothes and shoes appropriate for that.

About the Barn Abbey

The MacLeod Barn Abbey stands peaceful and serene at the edge of historic New Harmony, Indiana. Surrounded in a palette of green with a view of the Wabash River, the Barn Abbey is a place for meditation and offers solace to the mind, body, and soul.

The Barn Abbey features two floors of bedrooms and can sleep a total of 28 people with bunk bed-style rooms to be shared with one other person. Included on each floor are community bathrooms and showers (separate men’s and women’s and one handicapped-accessible). The blended wood used in the 1,000 square-foot meeting room and the large, adjacent dining room add a tangible presence of the structure’s history. The communal space can accommodate up to 50 people. The facility houses a kitchen that offers many of the modern conveniences needed to prepare group meals.
